Do you love hiking and climbing? Do you want to know closely the rare Cretan flora? Here is the real traveler's paradise, full of beautiful mountain trails.
Walk and climb.It's a great way to explore Spili and the surrounding area. Crete is a mountainous island. If you get to know the mountains, you will understand its character and personality! There are two E4 paths, labeled by the European Union. Follow the black and yellow markings and have a unique experience.
ROUTE 20
It starts in Spili and finishes in Gerakari. Its total length is 18.50 km and takes about 8 hours to cover. The best time to travel this distance is from March to October.
On this route you will come across small chapels, many fresh water springs, the torrent of Kissos Gorge, in the village Kissos. You will pass by the Byzantine church of the Holy Spirit and after a difficult climb on Cedar Mountain (Kedros), you will reach an altitude of 1776m. The panoramic views here are fantastic. Almost the entire prefecture of Rethymnon lies ahead. Psiloritis on the East, the White Mountains on the west. At the top there is the small chapel of the Ascension (Analipsi). Going down in 1500m and passing by Kerasies, you will enter Gerakari, a beautiful village on the north side of Kedros.
ROUTE 19
It starts in the village Agkouseliana and finishes in Spili. This is a 13.3 km route, covered in 4 hours, on relatively level ground with no difficulty.
After crossing small streams beneath the shade of plane trees, passing by large groves, churches and stone fountains, you will reach Mixorouma, where you will find tree-lined area full of birds. After that, you will get to Spili, to the old mills below the elementary school.
Two paths, two different routes. Route 20, more difficult, more demanding. Route 19, easier and smoother. Whichever one you take, the experience will be unforgettable.
